Weekly Hip Stretch – Stretch AND Strengthen

Once again, we’re stretching the tensor fasciae latae (TFL).

It may seem like I’m obsessed with the TFL. But I’m spending so much time on it because it’s a pretty important muscle. It’s a stabilizer for walking. It also connects to the iliotibial band (IT band) which covers a large part of the outside thigh and can often feel tight.

But… because they’re connected and share innervation, if you can keep the TFL muscle healthy, then the IT band will also be in better shape.

Illuminate me…

This exercise does double duty.  It’s a stretch and it strengthens the muscles that perform the opposite actions of the TFL.

So, if the TFL’s tight from overwork, this can help bring more balance to the muscles.

Try it…

What you’ll need:

-a floor
OR
-a counter or table.

Here’s the exercise.  Try it and let me know how you like it!

As always, go slowly and listen to your body.

Wishing you happy hips!
